Tadoba National Park - The Real Land of Tigers

Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve is located in Chandpur district of Maharashtra state in India. It is Maharashtra's oldest and largest national park. Tadoba-andhari Tiger reserve was created in 1995. One of the largest and oldest national park,  which has endless treasure trove of large number of species of trees & plants and wildlife like panthers, tigers, hyenas, sloth bears, wild dogs, jackals, barking deer, bison, sambar, herd of deer to name a few.  Overshadowed by teak & bamboo, and with a magical landscape of rugged cliffs, marshlands, lakes, etc.

"Tadoba" is taken from the name of the god "Tadoba" or "Taru", worshipped by the tribal people who live in the dense forests of the Tadoba and Andhari region, while 'Andhari' refers to the Andhari river that meanders through the forest.

The most popular species of trees is Teak and bamboo in this forest. Other common trees include:

Axlewood (Anogeissus latifolia) is a fire-resistant species growing here. Palas or flame of the forest (Butea monosperma) adds vibrant colour to the forest. Black plum trees grow in the riparian habitat around the lake. At the waterhole at Panchadhara, huge arjun trees are seen.

Patches of grasses are found throughout the reserve. Bamboo thickets grow throughout the reserve in abundance. The climber kach kujali (velvet bean) found here is a medicinal plant used to treat Parkinson's disease. The leaves of bheria are used as an insect repellent and bija is a medicinal gum. Beheda is also an important medicine found here.

Fauna In Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR)


There are 88 tigers, as of August 2016 in the reserve, and 58 in the forests immediately outside the reserve.

Tadoba National Park is a popular tiger reserve known as ‘The Land of Tigers’ as large number of tigers are found here, Aside from the keystone species, the Bengal tiger, Tadoba Tiger Reserve is home to other mammals, including: Indian Leopards, Sloth Bears, Gaur, Nilgai, Dhole, Striped Hyena, Small Indian Civet, Jungle Cats, Sambar, Spotted Deer, Barking Deer, Chital, Chausingha and Honey Badger, Rusty Spotted Cat, Gaur (Indian Bison), Indian Mouse Deer, Ratel, Wild Pig, Flying Squirrel, Four Horned Antelope, to name a few.

Rare black panther spotted in Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve

Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve ( Kolasa) : For the first time sighting of Black Panther , for Belgian couple when they visited to Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve, in the Shivanjhari area of Kolasa range on Tuesday,was a memorable one, as they saw a black panther, also known as the Ghost of the Forest because of its elusive nature. The image has sent frenzy amongst wildlife enthusiast. The Aernouts were out on their evening safari in Kolsa zone near Shivanjhari waterhole of the reserve and were eager to catch Shivanjhari Tigress. However, they spotted a leopard quenching its thirst and managed to photograph it. The couple was very excited and showed the photo.
